Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation is an Anishinaabe community on Lake of the Woods in Northwestern Ontario, within Treaty 3 territory.
Onigaming (pronounced On-EE-ga-ming) takes its name from the word for "portage." Before that name was officially adopted, the community was known by its traditional name, Sabaskong. The people are Ojibwe and live in Treaty 3, the traditional territory and homeland of the Anishinaabeg in Northwestern Ontario. Anishinaabe and English are spoken in the community.
The people once lived mainly on Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods, before moving to where they live now. Onigaming and Big Grassy First Nation were once together as the Assabaska First Nation, and became two separate First Nations in 1964. The Nation has six reserves. The main one is Sabaskong Bay 35D. It shares Assabaska with Big Grassy First Nation and Agency 30 with 12 other First Nations.
Culture is at the centre of community life. Onigaming has held a Traditional Pow Wow every year for more than forty years, and the community has a traditional roundhouse. Community leaders say that health will come from solutions found in the culture and on the land.
Onigaming was the first First Nation to take over responsibility for its own elementary education, and later its secondary education. Community services and businesses include:
